In the original Hebrew, they're called "the ten words." Brad Cummings says that one detail changes how every one of them is heard.

WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS

Scott Kesterson and Brad Cummings continue their series on the Ten Commandments by returning to the Hebrew, where the text calls them "the ten words," and Brad explains that the verb translated "perform" means to bring something into reality so others can see it. They set the words in their original scene — a people enslaved 400 years who had forgotten God's name, met at Mount Sinai with fire, thunder, and a trumpet that would not stop — and note that God opens with who He is and what He has already done, "I am the God who delivered you out of the house of slavery," before He gives the first word. Brad contrasts hearing them as orders, which puts the weight on us and reflects the old covenant, with hearing them as words shared in a conversation, where God asks what we can't do alone so He can work through us — then ties it to the Garden, where God's first question is "Where are you?", to humility defined as simple agreement with God, to a God whose name is a verb and who can't be reduced to a label or an image, and to a closing thought that God creates by speaking words, and these are His words.

KEY QUESTIONS ADDRESSED

• Why does Brad Cummings say the Hebrew text calls them "the ten words," and what changes when the verb translated "perform" means to bring something into reality instead of to carry out an order?
• What difference does Brad draw between hearing the words as orders that put the weight on us, the old covenant, and hearing them as a conversation in which God asks what we can't do alone, the new covenant — and why does it matter that God introduces Himself as the one who already delivered them before He gives the first word?
• Why does Brad say God's name is a verb rather than a noun, and what does that have to do with the warning against graven images and our habit of labeling and controlling what is too big to hold?
