County Fairs are a rich part of the nations history. The term "fair" seems to have originated from the Latin word "feria" meaning a holy day. This reflects the historical link between religious festival and large gatherings for worship that combined vendors of wears. In the US the first county fairs were built around agriculture and ranching. Over the years they became places to showcase new technology and new products, creative cuisine and amusement rides built around new understandings of science and technology. Our country fairs are the root of community, bringing people together to celebrate and put the world aside for a period of time. They are a root we just fight to preserve.

This one resonated so much with me - I MISS THEM SO MUCH - they’re mostly gone now and replaced with tat stalls where they exist. The kids used to be in awe of the tractors on show, and all the other kit. Even the annual Game Fair in Scotland is now poorly attended as shoots are closing down even there, the last bastion.

You’ve got me on a memory roll, Scott 😄 people made rugs and mats out of bailer cord, they looked amazing and hardwearing too, and then the endless things that could be made from the hessian feed sacks, all done in winter evenings by the fire. All displayed proudly in the Craft tent, where the prizes, as in all competitions, were a certificate and perhaps ten shillings, or a voucher from the local butcher.

In those days young and old understood there had to be winners and losers, it was friendly competition and if you didn’t win anything, people would say, there’s always next year. We so need that mindset back.

I used to love the tents! The flower tent, flower arrangement competition, the children’s ‘miniature gardens’ the vegetable tent, best vegetable, best chutney, best honey/jam, then the cake tent! Oh yum! Cake competitions for all ages, cake decoration, best scone, best bun, on and on! Then the craft tent, where people displayed their crafts as well as being in competition. The small animal tent, chickens, ducks of every breed, and goats too, all competing to be the best. Wonderful!
